Immunological Sciences
Institute
ROCHESTER, NY:
r. Tanya N. Mayadas has
been appointed Chair of the
DDepartment of Microbiology
and Immunology at the University of
Rochester Medical Center (URMC)
and the founding Director of its new
Institute for Immunological Sciences,
effective August 1, 2025.
A UR alumna, Mayadas earned
her PhD in Biochemistry at Roches-
ter before moving to Harvard Med-
ical School, where she served as a
tenured professor and led pioneering
research at Brigham and Women’s
Hospital. Her return to Rochester
signals a major investment in advanc-
ing translational immunology.
Her lab investigates immune cell activity during inflammation and au-
toimmune diseases, especially glomerulonephritis, a leading cause
of kidney failure. At URMC, she plans to expand research in immune
regulation, host-pathogen interactions, and cancer immunology.
The new Institute will bridge foundational science and clinical practice,
fostering collaboration, innovation, and cross-disciplinary training. “URMC
has the ideal environment to build a world-class immunology program,” Maya-
das said, emphasizing both scientific excellence and human connection in her
leadership vision.
