From continuity-first planners to bold spenders and long-term talent hunters, the IPL mini-

auction once again underlined how every franchise plays the same table very differently.

he IPL auction room is often mistaken for
a marketplace driven by impulse and star
Tpower. In reality, it is closer to a chessboard,
where franchises arrive with sharply defined philos-
ophies, varying appetites for risk and a clear sense
of what their squad actually needs. The 2026 IPL
mini-auction was a textbook example of this con-
trast, as teams such as Gujarat Titans, Mumbai In-
dians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Punjab Kings,
Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings
revealed sharply different strategies in pursuit of the
same objective: assembling a squad built to win over
        a long season.
Gujarat Titans offered the clearest case study
of a franchise backing continuity over upheaval. En-
tering the auction with most of their core intact, GT
made only five additions, focusing narrowly on plug-
ging specific gaps rather than reshaping the squad.
Chairman Jinal Mehta described the approach as
deliberate and disciplined, targeting fast bowlers,
        an all-rounder and a middle-order batter. Head
coach Ashish Nehra echoed that thinking, stressing Shreyas Iyer and Jitesh Sharma pose for a picture with the Indian Premier League trophy (ANI file photo)
